The Morris Brothers Program #1:
DRUG PREVENTION 3-5
This program incorporates the goals and objectives of drug prevention as specified by the Texas Prevention Curriculum Guide: Drug and Violence Education (DAVE) which was developed with Safe and Drug Free School's funds under a grant from the U.S. Department of Education (September '97). The following reveals the information the students will receive from this program.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
- A. The students will gain knowledge essential for making legal, safe, and healthy decisions about drug use.
The Morris Brothers will:
- 1. Provide information on "Drugs" including: legal vs. illegal drugs, short term and long term effects, physical/mental dependence, and how drug use affects our family and community.
- 2. Discuss how advertising affects drug, tobacco, and alcohol use.
- 3. Encourage students to recognize situations where drugs may be offered.
- B. Learn about attitudes and behaviors which prevent drug use.
The Morris Brothers will:
- 1. Discuss how focusing on our strengths and valuing our uniqueness can help us create a healthy self-concept.
- 2. Discuss characteristics that prevent drug use such as responsibility, courage, and respect.
- 3. Encourage students to identify trusted adults who can help them stay drug free.
- 4. Discuss the concept of "teamwork" and why teams have "rules".
- 5. Provide information on the concept of "Choices" including: consequences of choices, taking responsibility for choices, and the decision making process.
- 6. Inform the students of their responsibility to tell a trusted adult about strangers, problems, and unknown things or substances which might be dangerous.
- C. Students will acquire skills shown to prevent drug use.
The Morris Brothers will:
- 1. Demonstrate and discuss effective communication skills such as: empathy, how to resist negative influences, and how to handle negative emotions.
- D. Students will be encouraged to develop a personal plan to stay drug free.
The Morris Brothers will:
- 1. Discuss the process of goal setting
- 2. Emphasize the importance and benefits of: trying your best, being involved in drug free activities, choosing drug free friends, and staying drug free.
